Walter Chapman was born in Barnardiston in 1878 (Risbridge Q1-1878 4A:485), baptised in Barnardiston on 6th January 1878, son of John and Mary CHAPMAN (née MAYES).

1881 census...Aged 3, he was at Banstead's Farm, Kirtling with his father John CHAPMAN [34] farm steward; his mother Mary [33]; brothers David [11] and Ambrose [11 months]; sisters Matilda [8] and Ada [5]. All were born in Barnardiston.

1891 census...Aged 13, farm labourer, he was at Chippenham Road, Kennett with his parents, brothers Frederick A (Ambrose) [11] born Kirtling, John Sidney [6] born Kirtling and Arthur Bannett [1] born Kennett; sister Ella Rose [3] born Kennett.

1901 census...Aged 23, domestic groom, he was at Cottages in The Street, Ingham, with his parents; brothers Frederick (horseman), Sidney (carter) and Arthur; sister Ella

1911 census...Aged 32, single, a labourer in iron foundry, he was boarding with the GARRETT family at 13 Prospect Terrace, Gainsborough. His parents, brothers Frederick and Sidney and sister Ella were still in Ingham. 2 siblings had died.

He married Alice May BACKLOG [13-2-1887] (Bury St Edmunds Q3-1915 4A:2419) who on the pension card was at Garboldisham.


He enlisted in Attleborough whilst resident in Garboldisham.

He died of his wounds at No.7 Stationary Hospital, Etaples. His service record has not been found, so it cannot be stated exactly where or when he was wounded. Around that time his battalion were alternating between billets in BOUSIES and front line duties.
